How to Get Likes: 5 Ways to Increase Social Media Engagement

What’s on every business owner’s mind is how to get likes and comments on your social media platforms. These five tips will give you the boost you’re looking for.

When you’re browsing your Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn feed – what gets your attention? In other words, how do people get likes from YOU? Have you ever really stopped to think about it?

Most of us haven’t.

But I’ll bet that if you did, what you’d discover is that the posts that make you want to engage are, you guessed it, ENGAGING. Considering how often I hear people say “I wish I had more engagement on my social media,” I think we’d all be better off putting our attention on how we ourselves can be more engaging in our posts.

How to get likes is all about being engaging.

Below are five of my favorite ways to do jus that.

1) Ask a question.

We all know the best way to get someone at a party talking is to ask them about themselves, and social media is no different. Forget the intro, forget the commentary – just type one single question into your post box with an accompanying photo and see what you get… I bet you’ll get some likes.

2) Include visuals.

Have you ever heard someone say “I’m a visual person”? Well, the truth is – as human beings, we’re all visual people to some extent. A captivating photo or graphic is more likely to grab people’s attention than simple text alone when it’s amidst a busy news feed.

3) Fill in the ________.

Everyone loves a game. A great question to ask yourself is how you can “gamify” your social media posts. One great way is with a fill-in-the-blank game. Post a sentence with one word missing and ask your readers to fill in the blank. Just see what happens! (here are some ideas to get you started)

4) Ask people to tag a friend.

Asking your readers to tag a friend in the comments is a win-win: they get to show someone in their life that they were thinking of them, and you gain more views and engagement on your post. Examples? Ask readers to tag someone who made their week better, someone who makes their life easier, someone they’re grateful for, someone who is interested in x topic, or anything else!

5) Share a story.

In the end, nothing (and I mean nothing) is more engaging than a personal story. When you have an experience in your week that’s humorous, lighthearted, or just plain interesting – don’t be afraid to share it as a quick anecdote on social media. Humans love stories. The more of yourself and your life you put into your posts, the more people will want to engage.
