Do you need some time to rest and relax but for whatever reason, traveling is just not in the cards? Then a Staycation is your perfect solution. Otherwise known as taking a vacation while you STAY in your current city/town, a Staycation is a great way to recuperate without the hassle of traveling, all while keeping a modest budget.

Being someone who has taken many a Staycation in my day, I thought it’d be fun to share my top tips for making sure your Staycation is a joyous and relaxing success.

Make a “Wouldn’t that be fun?” List

Make life easy – brainstorm ideas of what to do on your Staycation ahead of time. What’s going on in your city/town that week? Festivals? Events? Concerts? Coming up with a BIG laundry list of ideas is fantastic because then, come your Staycation, all you have to do is look at your list and say “I feel like doing … that today!” This is actually a great type of list to make any time of the year 🙂 For more on that, check out my post The Someday Maybe List.

Decide on a Solo or Social Staycation

Is this Staycation for you and you alone to reenergize with some “me” time? Is it more of a social staycation for you to get to spend quality time with the people you love? Or is it both? Getting clear on this choice ahead of time will ensure that you get what you want and need out of your Staycation. Set your intentions for your planned playtime and then make it happen!

Check the Weather Ahead of Time

I firmly believe that a Staycation can be equally enjoyable whether the forecast shows sunshine or torrential rain all day. Just make sure to check your local forecast ahead of time so you can plan accordingly and find an activity to fit the weather. If it’s supposed to be rainy, a Star Wars movie marathon, trip to your local art museum, or returning to childhood and building a giant fort in your living room may be just the thing!

Do Something You Don’t Normally Do

One of the reasons people love traveling so much is that it gets us out of our day-to-day routines and allows us to see the world from a different perspective. And just the same can happen on a Staycation if we are intentional about it. Explore a part of your city/town you’ve never been to. Make a reservation at a restaurant you wouldn’t normally try. Go to the library, roam freely in the stacks for a few hours, and check out a book you might not normally go for. Any of these ideas (and lots more) will help to get you out of yourself and come away from your Staycation inspired and refreshed.

Remember to Treat Yourself

There are countless ways in which we can treat ourselves, and not all of them include ice cream (although there’s nothing wrong with ice cream). What about a barefoot walk in the park? Going out to the movies back to back solo? Attempting to recreate your favorite restaurant meal at home? Having an all-afternoon arts and craft session? Whatever treating yourself feels like to you, remember to take some time for it on your Staycation. After all, you work hard and you deserve it!
