The #1 Thing Most Solopreneurs Get Wrong on Their Website

Did you know that for many solopreneurs (entrepreneurs who build and manage their business entirely on their own), one of their TOP viewed website pages is almost always their “About Me” page?

It’s true.

And yet here’s the rub: most solopreneurs, when assembling their website content, shy away from putting their own photo on their website. And while I do understand the sentiment, the decision to avoid putting yourSELF on your website for fear of coming across as one of those “Me! Me! Me!” people? It’s not a smart decision.

Because the truth is, people want to see you. They want to know you. As a solopreneur, you are the one and only face of your business. As such, people want to know who they’re going to be doing business with – YOU!

Here are my top three tips to avoid making this #1 mistake so many solopreneurs make, while not laying it on too thick either.

#1: Compose Your “About Me” Page with Thought & Care

Not sure where to start? Take a look at my 15 Creative Prompts For a Stellar About Me Page to get started. Or simply tell your story in your own words. How did you get here? And why did you start your business? These are the gems people want to hear about.

#2: Introduce Yourself on Your Website Homepage

How would you feel if someone launched into telling you about their offerings without introducing themself first? I rest my case. The polite thing to do is introduce yourself on your website’s homepage. Take a look at my homepage to see what I mean. It doesn’t have to be too long – keep it short and sweet, with a link to learn more on your About page, and you’re all set.

#3: Keep your copy focused on your audience

Even when you’re talking about yourself, you can still make it about your audience too. For example, “My favorite thing about serving my customers is seeing the smile on their face when they realize they CAN have a website with that WOW factor they’ve always wanted.”

In Closing

Don’t get me wrong – there are certainly plenty of websites out there where the solopreneur behind it decided to put countless photos of themself on every page, and it comes across as a bit… self-focused. But chances are, if you’re reading this blog right now, this isn’t you. So set your fear of massive self-aggrandizing aside and give your audience what they want: a chance to get to know you.
