When I arrived in Arizona last month, I had the thought that it would be fun to perform a show or two while I’m here. I didn’t know of any venues and felt unsure of how to go about getting booked in a new town, so it was just a thought rolling around the back of my mind at that time.
But some days after arriving, I had the idea to ask my two friends who live here if they had any ideas for where I could perform. And what do you know, they know a couple who owns an upscale hot dog and donut restaurant that books folk artists on Sunday afternoons. They made an introduction, and bam, I got myself a gig.
A few weeks later, I had another idea. I texted my hosts (the lovely people whose guest house I’m staying in) and asked if they’d be open to me performing an informal house concert for them and a few friends any evening while I’m here. Not only did they enthusiastically agree – they also told me they’re hosting a fundraiser for a friend running for School Board, and asked if I’d like to perform a set at the party. And bam, just like that, I got myself another gig.
In retrospect, I feel this experience perfectly illustrates that when we know we want something (i.e. have a vision), if we start where we are with what we have, amazing things can happen when we simply ask the people around us for a little help.
And you’ll never know what could happen if you don’t ask!
So the next time you have a vision, even if the pathway to getting there feels uncertain (and it almost always will), start where you are. Ask who you know. Use what you have. You’ll be amazed at what can happen.
