This week, I received a text from an old college friend I hadn’t heard from in years. Now a jazz saxophonist in NYC, he’d recently finished developing content for an online how-to jazz course and needed some advice on how to set it up. Trying to keep costs down, he preferred to do it himself as opposed to hiring someone. So we spent an hour on Zoom, during which I shared with him the various WordPress plugins I recommended to set up the course, allow for online memberships, and receive payments on his website.
And then, off he went to tackle the job.
I heard from him many times over the course of the following weeks. It seemed he was running into every issue imaginable! Some challenges I could help with and others I couldn’t. But above all what really struck me was his perseverance toward achieving his goal. There was no giving up, no matter how long it took or how frustrating it got.
In truth, I found it inspiring. And you know what happens when I find something inspiring … I write a blog post about it! 🙂
What is the secret to that kind of perseverance? I thought. As I mulled over this question in my mind, eventually one word emerged:
Desire.
So today, dear readers, I leave you with the two lessons I learned from this experience:
To persevere against all odds and NOT give up until you achieve your vision, you must stay connected to your desire. For it’s your desire that is your driving purpose and reason behind it all.

Setting up a website yourself requires a LOT of time, energy, troubleshooting, and perseverance. Doing it yourself will save you from spending some money while hiring a professional will save you from the anguish of everything else 🙂
