When the holidays arrived this year, boy was I ready for a rest (and I don’t think I was the only one)!
So when it came time to write my weekly blog (aka “Short & Sweet”), I decided I deserved the week off.
Have you ever tried deleting something from your to-do list without actually doing it? It feels pretty amazing, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to try it sometime.
But then, inevitably, it became the following week. The week after I’d taken the week off. And whereas normally I feel excited to sit down and write my blog, this week I was overcome by a strange and unfamiliar thought and feeling.
But I don’t want to!
Where did this thought come from? After mulling it over for a few moments, I decided that this was yet another reminder of the sheer power of momentum (or lack thereof). When we take a rest from something, it’s perfectly natural for us to then want to keep resting from it. After all, an object at rest wants to stay at rest, does it not?
Consider this:
Have you ever noticed that it’s hard to get back to your workout routine after a vacation?
Have you ever noticed that when you make a change in your habits, it gets easier and easier as you go?
It’s no mystery why: Momentum!
So when we take a break from something (and by all means, we need to do this sometimes) let’s just remember – and even anticipate – that afterward, there will be that needed *push* to get back to where we were.
After I experienced that thought from the inner toddler – But I don’t want to! – I then gently *pushed* myself to sit down and write anyway.
And you know what? Next week will be a whole lot easier.
