Write an Email to Your Future Self

On the first day of December, I received an early morning email from my sister.

It read:

Check out this email I scheduled to send to myself last year!

And then below:

Super busy feeling! Don’t overschedule! Self-care time!

That, I immediately thought, will make for a perfect Short & Sweet blog.

Why would you want to write an email to your future self? Lots of reasons:

  1. As seen above, if you tend to over-schedule yourself during a particular time of year, you might need a *reminder* to save time for self-care.
  2. You might want to check in with your future self about a personal goal (or even a life vision) and remind yourself why it’s important to you.
  3. If you’re going through a hard time, you could share this with your future self so they can better appreciate when times are not so hard.
  4. Ever think to yourself, “I do NOT want to make this same mistake again”? Write to your future self, and you most likely won’t.
  5. You could send a snapshot of where you’re at right now: what you’re thinking about, what’s most important to you, etc., so your future self can reflect on how one grows and changes over time and appreciate the journey that is life.

The possibilities are endless! When you write a note to your future self (and it doesn’t have to be long, by the way – one sentence often does the trick), you’re giving yourself a gift. It could be a gift of motivation, perspective, gratitude, or something else.

What will you write to the future you?

PS: If you’ve never scheduled an email before, don’t worry, every email client has this option these days. Here’s how to do so in Gmail and Outlook.
