Pricing & First Impressions

A few years ago, I was shopping around for a new dining table and chairs. I’d visited a few stores with little luck when someone mentioned a furniture store I hadn’t heard of, so I decided to give it a try.

I drove across town to the address I’d looked up, and upon pulling into the parking lot, noticed it was perhaps the most poorly maintained parking lot I’d ever seen. The pavement was all cracked, and worse, weeds were growing up through the cracks everywhere. It looked like an abandoned lot! Wondering if this store was still in business, I hesitantly walked up to the doors. They were unlocked, so I went in.

Inside, I was surprised to find an immaculately tidy furniture store. I liked many of the pieces I saw, but when I looked at the price tags, I was shocked at how expensive everything was. I hadn’t thought about it consciously, but after seeing the parking lot, I realized I was expecting far lower prices.

So what’s the lesson here?

Well, for one thing, if you’re a high-end furniture store, you probably want to take care of your parking lot.

But in all seriousness, your customer’s first impression of your business matters. Your customer’s experience matters – from the very beginning to the very end.

So the question I want to ask you today, dear readers, is this:

Is the experience you’re providing for your customers in alignment with your prices?

We’ve all had the experience of an item’s cost seeming either way too high or way too low. Neither is good, and both make us skeptical – we worry we’re either getting tricked or simply ripped off. However, when the experience offered and the price given are in alignment, customers can purchase with confidence.

Which, as business owners, is of course exactly what we want 💕
