If you’re a business owner, your most important job is to build a business that takes care of you first.
I’ve always found that the absolute best thing about being a business owner can also be one of the hardest: no one is watching over us.
On the one hand, there’s no one hovering over our shoulder telling us what to do or how or when to do it. Total freedom! If you’ve ever had a micro-manager for a boss, I’m guessing this is now pure and utter bliss.
But on the other hand, there’s also no one there to make sure we don’t work 60 hours a week or grind ourselves into the ground or take on clients who treat us like garbage or set a precedent that we’re available to our clients 24/7 or basically give up our lives for our work.
When you’re a business owner, you have to be the one to build and create a business that takes care of you.
I’d love to share with you three ways I’ve learned (most definitely the hard way) to do just that.
1) Structure your time on your terms.
Isn’t it amazing how one small change can have a ripple effect throughout your entire business? One of the kindest things I’ve ever done for myself as a business owner is setting very specific days and times when people can schedule a call with me. This has led to more focused time to work on projects and more time to take care of myself, both of which equate to me doing the absolute best work that I can for my clients every day.
2) Allow room for a little spontaneity.
You own your business, and where’s the fun in that if you wake up each day and have absolutely no control over how your day looks? You hold all the power to build a business that allows you to change your plans when and if you need to, whether it’s to help out a friend in need, spend a few hours at the park, or anything else. Be wary of any learned practices or habits which might box you in or stifle your creativity.
3) Plan days/weeks off (far in advance).
You MUST schedule vacations for yourself! That’s an order 😉 I’ll admit when I clicked the “Book” button on a lakeside Airbnb last week, I thought to myself: Am I really doing this? Going away for four whole nights? This is crazy! But I’m happy to report that not only did my hesitancy turn into excitement – when I told my clients about my trip they actually expressed their sincere happiness for me. Always remember: the clients who are keepers understand that for you to be awesome for them, you have to take care of yourself first.
