I don’t know about you but speaking personally, whereas in my business things will always get done because I would never let my clients down, when it comes to my personal passion project (singing/songwriting), it can be hard to make time. I know the things I want to accomplish in the big picture i.e. write more songs, book more shows, make more albums, but there’s no structure to how or when it all gets done, so goals often stay in that “at some point” phase.
Because of this, a few months ago I began having weekly accountability calls with a friend. We name and track the activities we want to be doing each week as well as set bigger goals for each quarter.
For example, each week I aim to post once on Instagram/Facebook, practice guitar at least 5 out of 7 days, and each month I aim to compose one new song and send one newsletter to my mailing list. My bigger goals for next quarter are to finish recording for my second album and get started with a photoshoot and album design concept.
So how’s it going so far? The results of this weekly call have been nothing short of transformational. There’s nothing mysterious or magical about it – it’s quite simply that when we track our behavior and check in with someone every week, we’re going to be 100% more likely to get things done.
Do you have a passion project that doesn’t get as much attention as you like? Here’s my advice. Find someone who also has a passion project and is interested in becoming accountability patterns. Find a day and time you can connect each week whether via phone, Zoom, or in person. Begin each meeting by reporting your progress and then name and talk through any issues/obstacles that might be in your way. And that’s it.
I guarantee you, it will give your passion project that swift kick in the pants it might be needing 😉
