Last week while chatting with a new person I’d met, they off-handed mentioned their alter ego.
Alter ego?! I was immediately intrigued. Please tell me more, I asked.
He explained that his alter ego was able to do things he couldn’t… was able to be things he wasn’t. In essence, it allowed him to step outside of himself.
I loved the idea and my alter ego’s name came to me almost immediately: Ella Jane.
And what was she like? I knew right away.
Whereas Janelle is (admittedly!) organized, endlessly tidy, never misses a morning routine, loves to plan, sees the end of her to-do list every day, and rather dislikes spontaneity, Ella Jane is the complete opposite: she’s a free spirit who feels her way through life, embracing detours, spontaneity, and adventure at every turn. Ella Jane doesn’t sweat the small stuff or worry when it’s not warranted. Wise beyond her years, Ella Jane has the carefree attitude of a life wanderer, lover, and artist.
And unexpectedly, Ella Jane quickly started showing up in my life.
When encountering a struggle or stressor, I’d find myself thinking “What would Ella Jane do?”
Even better, sometimes I’d have conversations with her. She began to have a unique-sounding voice in my mind. I’d ask her what she thought about things, and she always seemed to have just the words or advice I needed.
Just as my new friend had described, she allowed me to step outside of myself.
And it felt wonderful.
So now it’s your turn. And trust me, it’s going to be fun.
What will your alter ego be like? What are the qualities you wish you had? Have you ever been curious about what it’d like to be different than you are? Now’s your chance.
And what will their name be? It can be a slight rearranging or changing of the letters in your name (as mine is) or even something different altogether.
It’s all, of course, up to you.
I hope you’ll love having an alter ego as much as I have. If you embrace it wholeheartedly, it can be liberating beyond words.
Have fun 🙂
