So there I was, sitting at my computer, thinking about what I should blog about this week, and then – BAM! – my answer arrived (in the form of an unread email in my inbox).
It was a note from a client who’d just watched a tutorial video I made for him showing him how to add new products to his online shop on his website. He wrote: “I slowed down your video to 80% so I could better follow it. I’ve probably rewound and watched portions of it 20 times and still having difficulty executing the changes. Sometimes it’s not clear how you arrived at a particular page because you’re moving too fast. I’ll keep at it.”
OH NO! I thought to myself. Of course, I immediately hit reply, apologized, and offered that we get on Zoom together to go over things so he could understand and follow along fully.
While this experience was a bit painful (What? Me make a mistake?) my client’s note served as an incredibly helpful reminder that it’s easy for us as business owners to forget how much we know and how well we know it – and more importantly – we forget that our clients don’t share all that knowledge we take for granted.
Furthermore, sometimes speaking slowly and using laymen’s terms is NOT talking down to someone. Sometimes it’s exactly what a person needs.
So let today’s blog post serve as a reminder to me, you, and all of us that if the person you’re talking to is making an expression like the one on the cute pup pictured above – it’s time to slow things down a bit 🙂
