3 Qualities of a Great Slogan / Tagline

Does your business have a slogan? You know, a few words that magically sum up what your business stands for and gives to the world?

Here are a few examples of slogans you probably can name the companies of:

Just do it.
Think different.
I’m lovin’ it.
Have it your way.
Expect more. Pay less.
Because you’re worth it.

(Answers at the bottom of this blog)

A slogan, if written thoughtfully and creatively, can help customers to better understand and remember your brand, offering, and value. So let’s look at three qualities of an awesome slogan as well as how to get started!

It’s Memorable

If you wrote your slogan one day but can’t remember it the next, you’ve probably still got some work to do. Your slogan should be simple enough (and hopefully catchy enough!) so that it’s easy to recall. Avoid obscure words that not everyone knows and words that are hard to pronounce.

It Conveys What’s Unique About Your Business

What about your business is different from others in your industry? Your first step is to reach clarity about that point, and your second step is to brainstorm words and short phrases that can express this uniqueness. Speaking for myself, I figured out at some point in my business that what differentiated me from other web designers is that I have a knack for getting to know my client and then creating something that’s a perfect reflection of them. This eventually led to my slogan: Get a website that aligns with you.

It’s Short & Sweet

Your slogan is NOT your mission statement. You don’t need to fit the whole kitchen sink in here. Your mission statement shares what your business does, who it does it for, and why. Your slogan, on the other hand, simply conveys the “spirit” or “vibe” of your business, ideally in 2-8 words – no more!

How to Get Started

When it comes to thinking up your perfect slogan, it’s all about a creative brainstorm. So do whatever helps you to get into a creative mood – go for a walk in the park, dance to some music, or even toss back a drink! Then let your mind run wild and write down everything you think of with no judgment. Most likely at the end of your brainstorming session, you’ll look over what you have and find a few shreds of something good.

In Closing

Coming up with a great slogan for your business is not necessarily easy but it’s worth the effort. A good one will, in a matter of seconds, convey to your prospects what’s unique about your business and why they should want to work with you! Good luck.
